Buddy

I never thought I would have a bird for a pet. I thought they were noisy and messy, and kind of just a high-maintenance decoration. Bigger birds I thought were cool, but noisy and messy, AND they bite! So, I thought, no birds for me.

Last August my sister Beth asked if we would bird-sit for a couple of weeks while they were vacationing. About eight or nine years ago, a friend of theirs found a cockatiel outside in a tree, and it just stepped nicely onto their finger. Beth adopted "Buddy." I never paid him much attention when we visited her house; in fact, I didn't get too close when he was out of his cage because she said he might bite. But bird-sitting for two weeks didn't seem like too much to ask, and we agreed.

At first I was happy to just let Wes and Connor be the bird-sitters and bird-entertainers. But as I observed, I began to develop a bit of affection for the little character. He could do the "wolf" whistle, and I was quite flattered when he did it to me! He could also whistle "Dixie!" Who knew a noisy little mess-maker could be so talented?

About a week into Beth's vacation, I got an email from her asking if we might like to consider adopting Buddy. She was planning to get a job in the fall, and no one would be around all day. That would make Buddy sad. She said that he was very social and liked being around people. If no one was home, he'd be cooped up in his cage all day and would get depressed.

Dave and Cory were on a week-long backpack at the time, so Wes, Connor and I talked about it. Wes and Buddy really seemed to hit it off, so I told Wes that if we did it, he would have to be the caretaker. He totally agreed. We figured Buddy was about nine or ten years old, and cockatiels can live to about 25. Hmm, I thought, I'll be how old when this bird dies? Let's just say, retirement age. :)

The idea grew on me, and I began to worry about what Dave would say, but I was surprised to find that he was open to the idea. So Buddy joined our family. For some strange reason, Cory became Buddy's favorite person. Strange, because Cory didn't particularly like him and was annoyed by him. Every time Cory would come into the room, Buddy's entire body language would change. He would whistle non-stop and open his wings. So entertaining!!

Who needs a dog when you have a watch-bird??? We always knew when someone pulled up to the curb or when the garage door opened because Buddy was sure to let us know. Squawk, squawk, squawk!! And when the phone rang, it became a double ring, because Buddy imitated it exactly!! Hilarious!

Last Monday morning when we took the cover off the bird cage, we knew there was something wrong. Buddy sat there panting, not moving, and barely opening his eyes. Wes and I left right away to take him to the vet, who told us that Buddy was a very, very sick bird. He said he could have been sick for a long time, but we never knew because birds are very good at hiding illness. They do that because in a flock, they would be kicked out if they appeared sick or weak. The vet said he could hospitalize him, put him in an incubator and give him oxygen and antibiotics and force-feed him ($$$$$$$$), but that he would still have a very small chance of surviving. We had to make the painful choice to have him put to sleep.

I never thought I would own a bird, and I certainly never thought I would love one. But I loved Buddy.

Prom!!

As if we didn't have enough going on here with Wes's birthday party, it is also Cory's prom night!! Such excitement! I deserted poor Dave in the middle of Wes's party to take Cory to the meeting place at the park for picture-taking, the results of which are posted here for your viewing pleasure!

Where does the time go????

Just makes me want to CRY!!!

What a day!!

Well, we have officially survived the onslaught of twenty large teenage boys celebrating Wes's 15th birthday at our house today! Dave arranged a digital scavenger hunt for them where they split into three teams, each of which took a camera around the neighborhood to capture the listed items (bonus points for more team members in the photo). For example, they needed a picture of their team hugging a complete stranger. Fortunately, we have very accommodating (and forgiving) neighbors!

Fortunately, the boys were able to cool off in the pool (after two hours of water polo practice!) on this hot day, but there was very little water left in the jacuzzi by the time they were through!

End Polio - Rotary International

As I walked into the store to pick up Wes's birthday cake, a lady handed me a card with a list of food items that she was collecting for the food bank. I saw on the card that the project was sponsored by Rotary. When I handed her the food items on the way out, I just had to tell her that my mom was in charge of Polio Plus for her Rotary chapter, and that I was so proud of the work they do. She said that last year she went on a trip to Mexico for Polio Plus, and that I should be proud of the work my mom does. Indeed, I am!!!

Green tinsel teeth

Connor Before:

He was so excited to go to the orthodontist and get his braces put on! For days all he could talk about was, "Should I get neon orange? Should I get fluorescent green?"

Connor After:

He wasn't as excited afterward. He opted for the fluorescent green, but hadn't particularly counted on the very weird feel of a mouth full of foreign objects and pain! At least he's still smiling!

FVHS Troubadours Precious Lord

I LOVE this arrangement of Precious Lord by Arnold Sevier!! Troubs were at a middle school doing some recruiting.

Pacific Chorale Festival Chorus - Lux Aurumque

I love choral music!!

Cory left early Friday morning for a choir tour to San Francisco to compete at the Festival of Gold! They were invited to this when they achieved the Gold level of performance at the Heritage Festival in Hawaii last year.

"This one-of-a-kind festival is designed for the most accomplished choral programs, and intended to provide choirs with the most relevant, meaningful and powerful choral festival experience ever. Nineteen of the nation's finest choirs were invited to perform in this exclusive event. In addition to individual festival performances, all the choirs performed together in a gala encore concert." (from their website...)

Saturday night the phone rang at 11:30, and it was Cory telling us that Troubadours won FIRST PLACE at this NATIONAL festival! Not only that, but Concert Choir won second place!! They didn’t even have the large groups in a separate category, so Concert Choir was competing against the likes of Troubadours!! How 'bout them apples????

The Troubadours flew back from San Francisco early Monday morning, not to get some rest, but to check in at the Orange County Performing Arts Center Segerstrom Hall for the Pacific Chorale American Masterpieces Choral Festival where they were one of only three featured performing groups. It also included performances by the John Alexander Singers and by the Festival Choir, composed of 200 voices from 20 high schools.

The Troubadours had the opportunity to work with the renowned composer Eric Whitacre. They performed his piece, "With a Lily in Your Hand," and Mr. Whitacre himself conducted the combined Festival Chorus singing his composition, "Lux Aurumque." The man is a genius!! (He looks like "Sawyer" on Lost!) The girls were all in love, and they were all immensely impressed with his talent.
