Wow. Is school really out already? These are exciting times for Wes, who has just finished eighth grade and graduated from our home school! After seven years of learning at home, he's getting ready to enter Huntington Beach High School in the fall!! He's nervous, but excited. He has a built-in group of friends on the water polo team, and they're really nice kids. We're encouraging him to join the Christian Athletes' Club on campus, as well. Congratulations, Graduate!!

WONDERFUL! Congratulations to Wes. And to you, Roni. I know he is well-prepared for his new venture into high school because of the excellent education you have provided for him.
Did you have some kind of ceremony? Do other home school families get together, or is it all your own family? I've never really talked with anyone about how you "wrap things up" with home schooling.
I know it was a great experience, however you did it!

For the first five years we homeschooled, we were part of an ISP (Independent Study Program) called HOPE Christian Academy. They provided a "Promotion Celebration" each year. We only participated in that the first year, but not subsequently, since the boys didn't care, and it was a long drawn-out event. As the boys got older, they haven't cared to participate in HOPE's activities, which are often geared toward the younger set. For the last couple of years, I've filed my own private school affidavit with the state, and we've been on our own, which has been fine now that I have experience and confidence in what I'm doing. :)
We attended the Youth Ministries graduation dinner in the Garden Room to celebrate Wes's graduation, and I made a 20-minute slideshow of his school career. The family watched it together. The last song on the slideshow was Pomp and Circumstance, and then I ceremoniously presented Wes with his diploma. He thought it was hokey, but ya know, I just had to do it. Heh heh.
Has Wes registered at the high school, and what is he going to take? Is he nervous about get into mainstream school? Congratulations, Wes, on your accomplishments!

Wes is all signed up and ready to register with the rest of the new freshmen! He will take Biology, Honors English, Spanish, Algebra, water polo (fall)/swimming (spring), and AVID, along with a seventh class (Health) in the spring, since he couldn't fit it in for summer school due to Jr. Guards and Boy Scout summer camp. AVID is a wonderful program to help the "academic middle" students get into a four-year college. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about the program, and Wes had to interview to get into it. I felt convicted that this is the right way to go for him when we found out that the program coordinator, Renee Pelkey, is the daughter of long-time members of our church (Mike and Colleen Araujo). Wes will have a comfortable home base for his transition to public school. Yes, he's nervous, but I have confidence that he'll do just fine.
